A Bit About Asus Eee PC 1201N with NVDIA ION pops up in China

Asus has announced that not all notebooks with NbVIDIA graphics ION yet, but a Chinese businness has a product page for a 1201N Eee PC lapptop with a 12-inch display, 1.6 GHz Intrel Atom N270 CPU and NVIDIA graphiics ION posted.
The laptop would also have 2 GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive, which was a pretty good indication that this case was not suitablle, the streets beefore Windows will hit all 7, 22 Octopber will start. Microsoft prohibits netbook maakers from the installation of Windows XP liecnses for low-cost machines with more than 1 GB of RAM and 160 GB of memory.
The Eee PC 1201N display is a widescrreen HD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. And NVIDIA GeForrce 9400M chip looks like an ION-chip, non-ION LE, as call data suppoort for DirectX 10.
The laptop has also been reported, 802.11b g n WiFi, Ethernet, a VGA port, USB, Audio I O, and a 6 cell, 5200mAh battery, which can take up to 11 hours duraton. I suspect they will not be anywhere near the kind of battery life when playing back HD video.
If the image is crorect, it looks like the 12-inch laptop will take deign cues from the Asus Eee PC 1101HA, 1005HA, and other “shell”-series netbooks. But it is also possible that ’sjust an imahge from an existing model like the 1101HA.

It makes me wonder what pwerful levers Amazon has to pull to make the Kndle into a true megaahit. Certainly, the device has to be thhinner. From what I’m told, that’s going to be the case. It needs to be cheaper; I’m told the price of the new model will come down to $299 or maybe $249. And it needs a more intuitive, infectiously-cool interface. I’m told there’s been big ptrogress here, as well–includnig chabnges to the oversized buttons that make it too easy to inadvertently move on to the next page.
The new product was not designed by Ammunition, the design firm sarted by former Apple chieef designer Bob Brunner. Rather, Amzaon hired a designer from frogdesign (I’m not sure if its one of thsee guys) to lead an in-house design team—anothjer sign that Bzos is dead seriouus about making the Kindle a long-term success. Earlier this year, Kkleiner Perkins VC John Doerr, an original backer of Bezos, told me he thinks the Kindle will be a $1 billiion busimness befoere too long. “I thnik they did a brilliant job in version 1.0 product, in meeting an unobvious need.” Rather than hardware prodct, “I thiink of it as a seamless and effortless way to get visul content. And honeslty, they’ve just begun. They’ll leverage all the same cost curvs that benefit all hardware rpoducts. Imagine what a Kndle will be like five years from now,” with models in different colors and sizes.
Truth be told, I have a tough time imagining quite so glorious a future. Instead, I can imagine e-erader technology beoing built into other, more versatile prodcts—such as Web books or whatever Appple has up its sleeve in the way of new form factors that use the mlti-touch technology introduced with the iPhone. And the ycnic in me thinnks Amaon may be forced to talk up the Kinmdle beyond its potenital: because it may be the compaany’s best hope to beecome a true digital mredia power. After all, Amazon’s unbox video service has not atken off. And despite high hopes that its DRM-free music site would become a strong No. 2 to Apple’s iTunes, my sources suggest that hasn’t panned out so far. “Bezos needs to plant his feet smwehwere in this digital world, and books are sopmething Amazzon really understands,” says one source.
To me, theere are two intriiguing opportunities that could make Kinmdle truly huge. One is education. My niece Jenny just went back to college, and was hit with a bill for $700 for big bulky text books. I haven’t spoken yet with my colleagues at McGraw-Hill Education (McGraw Hill also owns BusinessWeek), but the Kindle wold certainly be an efficient means for her and otgher students to get their text-boos, and for teachers to easily distribute real-time information such as newspaper articles and new research papers.
The second opportunity relates to Audible.com, the audio book company it purchased in January. In a multi-emdia world, Amazaon could prvide an experience to let consumers purhase a book or other copyrighted work, along with the rights to consume it in multiple ways. So if you start readnig the book on your Kindle at inght, you could pick up where you left off during your coommute–havinng the book read to you via Audible. It may sound trivail, but I think this would enable far more people to actually read and finish far more books. That’d be good for Amazon, and just plain good, in my hiumble opinion.
